I was asked to watch a TED Talks video and follow it up with a review. I watched
Kare Anderson: Be an opportunity maker.
In the presentation Kare talks about exactly that, making opportunities.
She opens with how she is extremely shy and how she used to stutter when speaking. Which made her feel like people would talk around her and not notice what she had to say. She's overcome that and made opportunities for herself.
Kare brought up how everyone is the best at something and jokingly compared it to, and disproved the saying "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room."
She turns that into the idea of everyone working together with their best skills to improve the greater good. Mainly people with different "best skills." When people work together who are all good at the same thing they become rigid in their ideas. However, your opportunities are boundless when working with people who are all good at something different.
Overall this TED Talks was great! Kare Anderson was interesting and effective. The video was shorter which gave it a quick and engaging pace. I liked the encouragement to work with people who are better at different things, and how that can branch out the opportunities available.

How organizations utilize social media.
I'm developing a report on how two different organizations use social media.
The first organization is IGN. IGN is a news site dedicated primarily to video games, but they also cover movies, TV, comic books, and everything in-between.
IGN uses both Facebook and twitter religiously to update its followers on what is going on in the industry. I want to get video game news as fast as it breaks. Following IGN on twitter is the best way for me to get that information. They use both Facebook and Twitter to announce and link new articles as they're published to their site. They're targeting anyone who has interests in anything they cover on their website.
IGN will often tweet and post to it's followers when they ask questions. They also have a lot of giveaways on social media as well. So it's beneficial for you to get the information you want and get free stuff. Who doesn't love that? There main source of income is advertisement revenue through article visits and site hits. Their social media often directs you to their site. Which in return gets them money through ad revenue.
The second organization is Gamestop. Gamestop is a video game retail store. They sell video games online and in their 6,000 plus stores.
Gamestop uses both Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately what they post on their Facebook feed and Twitter feed are identical. Not to say the information is bad, it's just all the same.
Gamestop's primary use of social media is to advertise upcoming releases of video games and video game consoles. So that you can pre-order what you want through their company. They also plug game discounts, and sales on used video games they sell. They are using this service as another way to advertise to their targeted audience of gamers. Gamestop seems to only use the platform for advertising purposes. There is hardly any interaction with their followers.
In comparison I think IGN uses social media better. But they don't have to try and sell anything for their business to succeed. It's a tough comparison in that regard, but the way they operate makes it easier to get value from their social media.

Why I am at MATC
Why am I at MATC? It's simple really, I'm here to finally go in the right direction career wise. The low tuition, location of the campus, and reputation are obviously good as well. But the main reason is to put myself on the right path. I believe MATC can do that for me.
Up until a few months ago I only had two different jobs in my life. I worked at a Dairy Queen for eight years, and at a St. Vincent De Paul thrift store for one. I ended up hitting a wall in both jobs. I needed to find something that was actually going somewhere. That's what lead me to MATC.
I do already have an Associates Degree in Arts and Science, but that doesn't really help me get into a career. So I do have college experience, but what I wanted was experience that taught and focused my skills. I've always had interest in computers. I have a lot of friends in the field and that's what set my sights on a Technical College. After looking into my options and seeing what schools I could attend in my vicinity MATC seemed like the best.
The next step was selecting the program I wanted. After researching online and looking at all of the great resources on the MATC website I ended up in the Network Specialist program. Networking jumps out as something I can see myself doing on a daily basis. So far I am not disappointed in the choice of my program or MATC. I am excited to keep moving forward!
